Nicaragua ‘isleta’ boating and canopy tours

Based out of the colonial city of Granada, we kick off with a zip line canopy tour on Mombacho volcano. This is easily the most impressive zip-line tour in the country with 17 platforms 10 to 100 ft. above the forest floor. From Mombacho you’ll be able to see an archipelago of small islands (known locally as isletas) in Lake Nicaragua. That’s where we’re heading for lunch.

The archipelago is made up of numerous volcanic islands luxuriant in fauna and flora (some say there are 365 islands, one for each day of the year). If you’re a bird watcher, this is a great place to see a diversity of bird life, to add to what you’ll have seen while on the canopy tour.

We’ll pick up a boat at the end of Granada’s lake front road and ride the shaded narrow channels between the islands. A range of luxury homes have been built on some of the private islands. The owner’s names read like a who’s who in Nicaragua. After lunch on one of the islands we’ll head back to Granada passing by an island that’s inhabited by a colony of monkeys.
