Places to Visit Near the Smoky Mountains

The Smoky Mountains are the most visited national park in the United States. It extends through North Carolina and Tennessee and attracts millions of people every year. Whether you are looking for great places for your summer vacations or are a hiker trekking through the mountains there are plenty of places to explore.

This area is a beautiful place to visit at any time of the year especially in the fall as the leaves on the trees begin to change. There are plenty of trails here including access to the Appalachian Trail. While you might not have the time or the energy to complete the entire hike of the Appalachian trail you can at least say that you have been on it! Spotting wildlife such as bears is common and often happens unexpectedly as the area is home to many species of animals.

Two towns near the Smokies are Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg, TN. They are two small towns who have taken off due to the tons of tourists coming to the area and they have activities for everyone to enjoy.

Pigeon Forge is the home to Dollywood, a theme park owned by Dolly Parton, which is celebrating its 25th year this year.  It has plenty of rides, great southern food and an overall southern feel to it.  Both Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge have main streets lined with museums, putt-putts, restaurants, and all of the things made to attract tourists. Both streets can become filled with cars and feel like giant parking lots during busy weekends and nights.

There are numerous cabin rentals, hotels and campgrounds depending on what accommodations you like to stay in and how you want to explore the area.  Hikers will want to have small tents like a 1 person tent, that are light and easy to carry.  On the other hand, families might enjoy the accommodations of a more comfortable hotel or cabin.
